During his senior year, my son came home raving about becoming an HVAC technician.
Over the last 18 months, I had heard him raving over joining the military, going to college for marine biology, and earning his certificate for cyber security.
His raving about becoming an HVAC technician didn’t even phase me. I was sure that within a couple of months, he would change his mind and go off on another tangent about another career after graduation. Other than HVAC, most of his choices involved furthering his education for a future career, and that’s what I was hoping for my son. When six months passed, and he was still planning on being an HVAC technician, I was in shock. I finally cornered him and asked him why it was so important for him to become an HVAC technician? He was straightforward with his answer. He told me that not only did HVAC sound like a fun career to get into, but it paid well if you did your job right. I didn’t think he had thought this through completely, but at least he had some reasons for wanting to become an HVAC technician. I told him that if he was still interested in HVAC as a career after graduation, I would pay for him to go to the local community college and take the HVAC certification classes. You would’ve thought I had handed him $1 million. He was so thrilled with my offer to pay for him to become an HVAC technician that I got my first hug in almost a year. That’s quite an achievement for a dad to get a hug from his son.
