I called the Heating and Air Conditioning serviceman early last week.
My son Doug is also a Heating and Air Conditioning serviceman, and he worked for that company.
I really wanted to know if he had worked the last few days. They said that he had been working at the Heating and Air Conditioning company, but he was also on call for the last two days. He caught a few hours of sleep at work, he said. She said half the people at the Heating and Air Conditioning company were out with the flu, and with some other bug. So then when my kid came to the beach house that afternoon, he looked haggard and much older than his twenty-two years. He asked for something to eat, too, but he fell asleep before I could fix it and give it to him… After covering him up with a blanket on the couch, I left him asleep on the sofa until he woke up the next afternoon. He ate his lunch and then took off, nearly running out the door. He had his uniform on and I knew he was going back to the Heating and Air Conditioning company. He turned around and gave me and his dad a kiss on the cheek and told us both thank you. I wasn’t sure what he was thanking me for until he said it was for making him get a flu shot earlier that year. I laughed as he headed out to work that day. Finally things calmed down at the Heating and Air Conditioning company and my son’s long shifts came to an end; Now, I felt like I could tell him I needed some help with our oil furnace at the house without feeling guilty. When his long-term shift started more than three days earlier, my oil furnace was making odd noises, but I didn’t want to say anything about it!
