Do you think that I should still get a furnace if I have a fireplace? I am building my house, and the contractor wants me to make a decision about the heating systems.
I have already decided that I definitely want to install a fireplace in my house.
I have never had a fireplace in my house, but the house that I grew up in as a kid definitely had a fireplace, and I loved it. There is something about a fireplace that makes you warm and welcome, and the smell of burning wood is wonderful. I will have the fireplace connected to a series of vents so that the fireplace will always be able to provide heat to my entire house rather than just the room that the fireplace is in. Since I know that I want a fireplace, that part of the planning is easy. However, I don’t know if I want a furnace as well. The contractor asked me if I wanted to install a furnace, and at first, I did not understand why I would even want to install a furnace. Why would I want to install a furnace? Once the contractor explained it, it made sense. During the middle of the night, the fireplace will usually burn out, leaving the house pretty cold. If I purchase a furnace, the furnace would only kick on during those hours and would run until I got the fireplace going. It wouldn’t be very expensive, but it would act as a heat source during the middle of the night. The furnace would also act as a backup in case something ever happened to my fireplace. Although it would be expensive, it sounds like a good idea to have a furnace just in case.
